Scientists and academics have a special way of talking to each other. It’s stuffy and formal and … okay, it’s a bit pretentious. Apparently it’s not nice to call each other “stupid” in front of normal people like you and me.
But when you speak fluent sarcasm, you can still point to the stupidity in a way that’s pretty hard to miss. Like the following letter from Tom Naughton to a diabetes researcher with an inflated sense of self-importance.

I’ve heard a few discussions lately from parents worried about their children’s weight. Opinions ran from putting the kids “on a diet” — which I’ve already said is a bad idea for anyone — to the idea that even discussing weight with a child is a recipe for eating disorders.
I can see both points of view, and have an opinion of my own, but I want to know what you think. Take a minute to answer the question below. Even if one of the answers is pretty close to perfect for you, please don’t hesitate to say more in a comment afterward.
Loading ...I love corned beef hash. But it’s full of potatoes which limits it to a weekend-only food, and the canned stuff is usually loaded with other stuff I’m not interested in.
But it turns out small white beans work perfectly in place of the potatoes. So now I’ve got a great way to use up leftover roast beef. Winning!

Our dog, Bean, is about a year-and-a-half old. She still acts like a puppy, which is usually just fine. It used to be cute when she’d jump up on visitors at the front door (That’s not her up above, click here to see a picture of Bean.) but now she’s much bigger and we needed to stop the jumping.
Fortunately I know how to train a dog to not jump up. It starts with the idea that dogs don’t really understand the idea of “No”. [Read more…]

Finally, from an online friend, there’s this.
And I think I’m losing something. I’m making grilled pizza. Homemade dough, some good sauce, onions, sweet red peppers, mozzarella cheese, and a little Italian sausage. Wife asks me what’s on the pizza. I tell her. She asks again. I tell her, again. She holds out the Italian sausage and asks what’s on the pizza. Not the sausage, apparently.
And now you damn whippersnappers are gonna laugh. Well, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!
It’s best that I not admit how easily this could be me.
You like omelets but don’t have time to cook each morning. So make one omelet pie and freeze slices of it. A minute to nuke it and you’ve got breakfast. (Minute-and-a-half if you’ve got a low-powered microwave like mine.)
